Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate mortgage loan applications and supporting documentation for accuracy and adherence to agency, investor, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct in-depth analysis of credit reports, income documents, and property appraisals to assess risk and approve or decline loan submissions.
- Apply a balanced mix of automated underwriting systems and manual review to arrive at timely, accurate decisions.
- Collaborate closely with processors, closers, and loan officers to address file discrepancies and support a streamlined underwriting process.
- Maintain clear, respectful communication with team members across departments, explaining underwriting conditions and helping solve eligibility concerns.
- Stay updated with federal and state regulations, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, and USDA guidelines, and apply policy changes appropriately.
- Ensure proper documentation, compliance, and audit readiness by maintaining accurate and complete loan records.
- Participate in internal quality control audits and post-close reviews to enhance consistency and best practices.
- Provide input on operational improvements to reduce turn times, enhance customer experience, and increase loan quality metrics.

Qualifications and Experience
Must-Have Skills
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in residential mortgage underwriting
- Expertise with conforming and non-conforming loan types, including FHA, VA, USDA, and conventional loans
- Strong analytical ability to detect inconsistencies or risks within complex loan files
- Mastery of both automated systems (DU/LP) and manual underwriting methods
- Ability to navigate regulatory compliance while maintaining customer-centric decision-making
- Excellent time management with a track record of meeting daily and monthly underwriting targets
- Polished communication skills to convey underwriting rationale, conditions, and appeals
Preferred Qualifications
- Active DE (Direct Endorsement), SAR (Staff Appraisal Reviewer), or LAPP (Lender Appraisal Processing Program) certifications
- Prior success working in a remote, high-volume underwriting environment
- Experience working with a variety of loan products, including jumbo and investor-specific overlays
