Position Overview
You will be responsible for designing and developing high-quality, engaging online courses as an online course developer. Working closely with subject matter experts, instructional designers, and multimedia teams, you will create course content that enhances the learning experience and meets educational or professional development goals. Your primary objective will be to transform instructional concepts into interactive, learner-centered online modules. You will be involved in every stage of course creation, from research and ideation to design, production, and final launch. Key Responsibilities
1. Course Design and Development
- Collaborate with Instructional Designers: Work alongside instructional designers to understand each course's learning objectives and outcomes. Use this collaboration to inform the course structure, ensuring a logical flow of information.
- Content Creation: Develop detailed content outlines and scripts that align with the course objectives. This includes writing clear, concise, engaging instructional materials, assessments, and multimedia assets.
- Multimedia Integration: To enhance learner engagement and retention, integrate multimedia components such as videos, interactive simulations, quizzes, and infographics into the course. Ensure all media elements are accessible and meet industry standards for online learning.
- Develop Engaging Learning Activities: Design exercises, assignments, and interactive components that promote active learning and critical thinking. These activities should allow learners to apply what they've learned in real-world scenarios.
2. Technical Development
- LMS Integration: Work with Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard to upload and organize course materials, assessments, and multimedia. Ensure that courses are easy to navigate and user-friendly.
- eLearning Tools: Create high-quality online learning modules using authoring tools such as Articulate 360, Adobe Captivate, or Camtasia. Ensure the content is compatible with multiple devices and browsers.
- Maintain Course Quality: Regularly review and update course content to ensure it stays current and accurate. This includes fixing technical issues, updating links, and revising content as needed.
3. Collaboration and Communication
- Work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs): Regularly communicate with SMEs to gather accurate and relevant information for the course. This collaboration will ensure that course content is factually correct and meets educational or industry standards.
- Project Management: Coordinate with the project management team to ensure that deadlines are met, resources are allocated efficiently, and course production stays on track. This will involve adhering to established workflows and maintaining open lines of communication across departments.
- User Feedback and Iteration: Analyze course users' feedback to identify areas for improvement. Use learner analytics and course performance metrics to iterate on course design and content, ensuring continuous improvement in learning outcomes.
4. Innovation and Best Practices
- Stay Updated on Industry Trends: Attend webinars, workshops, and conferences to stay informed about the latest trends in online education, instructional design, and eLearning technology. This will help you keep up with new developments and incorporate cutting-edge practices into course design.
- Accessibility and Inclusion: Ensure all courses comply with accessibility standards, such as WCAG 2.1. Design courses that are inclusive and accessible to all learners, including those with disabilities.
- Apply Instructional Design Best Practices: Use established instructional design frameworks such as ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) or Bloom’s Taxonomy to ensure a structured and pedagogically sound approach to course development.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Design, Education, eLearning, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred but not required.
- 3+ years of experience in online course development, instructional design, or a related field.
- Proficiency with eLearning authoring tools such as Articulate 360, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, or similar platforms.
- Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard.
- Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and engagingly.
- Multimedia skills: Basic video editing, graphic design, and interactive media development knowledge is a plus.
- Project management experience: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
- Familiarity with instructional design models such as ADDIE or SAM (Successive Approximation Model).
- Understanding adult learning theories and principles, with the ability to design learner-centered and outcomes-focused content.
