Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite FHA mortgage loan files with Direct Endorsement authority while ensuring full compliance with HUD regulations and investor guidelines.
- Assess all aspects of a mortgage file, including borrower income, employment, assets, credit, and property appraisals.
- Deliver accurate, timely underwriting decisions with detailed reasoning, including approvals, suspensions, and declinations.
- Review and validate automated underwriting system results, ensuring they align with manual underwriting standards when necessary.
- Communicate effectively with loan officers, processors, and closing teams regarding outstanding conditions or file discrepancies.
- Provide consistent guidance to internal teams about regulatory updates and investor overlays.
- Maintain productivity metrics while upholding quality expectations with minimal underwriting defects.
- Assist in post-closing review processes or respond to audit inquiries from HUD or investors when required.
Qualifications and Skills
Required Experience and Credentials
- Active FHA DE Underwriter Certification with current Direct Endorsement approval
- At least 3 years of experience in FHA and conventional mortgage loan underwriting
- Familiarity with a variety of loan products, including purchase, refinance, and cash-out transactions
Technical Proficiency
- Proficiency in DU (Desktop Underwriter) and LP (Loan Product Advisor)
- Knowledge of Encompass or equivalent LOS systems, and experience navigating digital document repositories
- Strong ability to identify guideline exceptions and escalate appropriately
