Job Description:
We seek a highly skilled and experienced Payroll Director to lead our payroll department remotely. As the Payroll Director, you will oversee the entire payroll process, ensuring accurate and timely employee compensation while maintaining compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Your role will involve strategic oversight, process improvement, and team leadership to enhance payroll efficiency and effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Payroll Management:
- Develop and implement payroll strategies, policies, and procedures to ensure consistent and accurate payroll processing.
- Align payroll operations with organizational goals and objectives, providing strategic insights and recommendations to senior management.
- Payroll Operations Oversight:
- Manage and oversee the end-to-end payroll process, including processing payroll runs, calculating wages, and ensuring proper deductions and withholdings.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations, including tax, labor, and wage and hour laws.
- Monitor payroll processing systems and tools to ensure they function correctly and efficiently.
- Team Leadership and Development:
- Led, mentored, and developed the payroll team, including payroll specialists and administrators, to ensure high performance and professional growth.
- Conduct regular team meetings, performance reviews, and training sessions to enhance team capabilities and address issues or concerns.
- Compliance and Risk Management:
- Stay current with changes in payroll-related legislation and regulations, ensuring that payroll practices remain compliant and up-to-date.
- Conduct regular audits of payroll processes and records to identify and resolve discrepancies, ensuring accuracy and integrity in all payroll activities.
- Manage relationships with external auditors and regulatory agencies as needed.
- Process Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance payroll efficiency and accuracy.
- Evaluate and recommend payroll software and systems to support operational needs and streamline payroll functions.
- Reporting and Analysis:
- Generate and analyze payroll reports, metrics, and trends to provide insights and support decision-making.
- Prepared and presented payroll-related reports to senior management, including budget forecasts and variance analyses.
- Employee Relations:
- Address and resolve payroll-related employee inquiries and concerns promptly and professionally.
- Collaborate with HR and other departments to ensure accurate and effective payroll administration.
- Project Management:
- Lead or participate in payroll-related projects like system implementations, upgrades, and process changes.
- Manage project timelines, resources, and deliverables to ensure successful project outcomes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or similar certification is highly desirable.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in payroll management, with at least 3 years in a leadership or director-level role.
- In-depth knowledge of payroll laws and regulations, including federal, state, and local requirements.
- Proven experience with payroll software and systems, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other reporting tools.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively manage and motivate a remote team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and integrity.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with global payroll operations and multi-state payroll processing.
- Familiarity with HRIS systems and integration with payroll systems.
- Advanced degree in a related field or additional payroll or human resources certifications.
Work Environment:
- This fully remote position offers flexibility in work hours and location.
- Occasional travel may be required for team meetings, training, or conferences.
