About the Role

As a Sports Operations Data Analyst, you aim to extract meaningful patterns from complex sports data sets and provide operations teams with the necessary intelligence to optimize performance, logistics, and scheduling. You’ll partner with operations managers, data teams, and performance analysts to streamline workflows, identify inefficiencies, and elevate overall execution in sports management.

Key Responsibilities

Data Acquisition & Preparation

  • Collect, validate, and clean structured and unstructured sports-related data from internal databases and external APIs.
  • Design and automate data pipelines for consistent and timely data delivery.

Insight Development

  • Perform statistical analyses and generate dashboards that reveal trends in game-day logistics, ticket sales, athlete performance, fan engagement, and vendor management.
  • Deliver high-impact insights influencing staffing, inventory planning, scheduling, and other critical operations.

Reporting & Visualization

  • Create custom visual reports using tools like Tableau or Power BI to communicate findings effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Present insights in digestible formats tailored to operations leaders, coaching staff, and executives.

Collaboration & Strategy

  • Work closely with sports operations leaders to understand evolving needs and proactively suggest data-driven solutions.
  • Collaborate on forecasting models to anticipate demand, optimize resources, and reduce operational bottlenecks.

Tools and Technology You’ll Use

This role calls for a tech-savvy analyst who is comfortable juggling multiple platforms. You’ll regularly work with:

  • SQL for querying and data extraction
  • Python or R for statistical modeling and automation
  • Tableau, Power BI, or Looker for visualizations
  • Google Sheets or Excel for agile reporting
  • Cloud platforms like AWS or Google Cloud for data storage and retrieval
  • Sports data APIs and proprietary sports information systems

What Success Looks Like

In your first 90 days, you’ll:

  • Build a foundational understanding of the sports operations data ecosystem
  • Deliver your first set of analytical dashboards

Within 6 months, you’ll:

  • Lead the design of automated reporting processes
  • Act as a strategic advisor on at least one operations project

Qualifications and Experience

Must-Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Sports Management, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience in a data analyst or operations analyst role
  • Proven expertise in SQL and one analytics language (Python, R, etc.)
  • Experience with dashboarding tools like Tableau or Power BI
  • Strong storytelling skills to interpret data into compelling narratives
