Key Responsibilities

Underwriting and Loan Evaluation

  • Analyze borrower financial data to assess risk and ensure the loan meets VA criteria.
  • Scrutinize credit reports, income statements, tax returns, and bank statements.
  • Evaluate property appraisals for accuracy and compliance with VA valuation standards.
  • Utilize tools like Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Prospector (LP) to aid in loan decisions.
  • Recommend loan conditions, suspensions, or denials with a well-supported rationale.

Compliance and Documentation

  • Ensure full adherence to VA guidelines, investor requirements, and internal policies.
  • Monitor documentation for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Keep thorough digital records of decisions, conditions, and communications.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma required; associate or bachelor's degree in finance or related field preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in residential mortgage underwriting, including 1+ years with VA loans.
  • Familiarity with federal housing regulations, VA Circulars, and investor overlays.
  • DE or SAR credential is highly desirable but not mandatory.
  • Ongoing education or VA continuing education units (CEUs) are a plus.

  • Experience with automated underwriting systems (AUS) such as DU and LP.
